Hey All You Outsiders

For those you brave souls who will be tabling outside in front of New Visions, please be wary of the weather. I cannot stress this enough. It has rained every year since we started this and we do not have any way to accommodate your artwork. As stated in the sign-up form, you must provide your own table, chairs and weatherproofing materials such a tent. The inside of the building is jam-packed but we will call you if we have some last-minute stragglers drop out.

Zine Scene Article in The Weekender

Attention: We are now taking your calls.

Actually we would just like to thank Rich Howells and his team at the Weekender for writing our cover story article! Thank you to all who filled out the questionnaire for the written piece. Our own Iris Johnston and Joseph Carlough were mentioned featured with their answers and we really do appreciate everyone’s input. If you have a chance and you’re around town, pick up the Weekender! You won’t regret it. We’ll also have some copies at the fest. See you Saturday!

Great Food at this Year’s Scranton Zine Fest

At this year’s zine fest, we will be having great homemade favorites provided by Crispin’s Catering. On this year’s menu we have three hot foods including amazing pulled pork sandwiches, vegetarian pasta fagioli and vegan chili. Then for desserts, we will have Texas sheet cake (pictured above, similar to a fudge brownie), rich red velvet cupcakes, tandy cake (a peanut butter and chocolate cake square) and vegan chocolate chip cookies!

Later in the night, enjoy light fare and wine stay and tuned for a great line up of poets and authors. The night will conclude with the announcement of our 50-50 raffle winner. 50-50 tickets can be purchased at the door for a reasonable price.

We can’t wait to see you all!

Important Day-Of Information for Zinesters & Artists

Please read the following very carefully as some information has changed.

Arriving

• When you arrive, please check in at the front registration desk.
• Doors will open at 11 a.m. sharp for table set-up. Please do not show up any earlier as the doors will only be open to zinefest staff members and volunteers.
• Doors to the public will open promptly at 12 p.m. (noon). Make sure your table is ready with price tags, bells, whistles and all.

Tables

• Be aware of size. Tables are 8 ft. long for full table participants and 4 ft. long for half table participants. There will be a divider on the table so you can prepare your set-up. Additionally, there will be 2 seats provided per table. If you need more chairs, please bring them with you.
• Jazz up your table! The more attractive you make your table, the more interest people will have. Signs, interesting displays (such as a handmade shelf), or even a tablecloth will create appeal and a world of difference.

Food

• There will be delicious free hot food & desserts donated by Crispin’s Catering supplied at 2:30 p.m. for participants. You will receive a food ticket that can be redeemed for one hot item and one dessert. Afterwards, it’s open to the public for a price so come and get it while you still can! And no worries, we will be supplying vegetarian and vegan options as well.
• There are also various surrounding cuisines and take-out joints. View the map for addresses and directions. It’s great to bring some friends to watch your table if you decide to run out for food.

Poetry Reading

• After the zinefest, at 5:30 p.m. in the same location, we will host the poetry reading potion of the festival. To make space, we must fold up the festival tables for more seating room, but please don’t be alarmed when we start packing everything up. Make sure all your items are packed and cleared off the tables by 5 p.m.
•  We really encourage zinefest participants to stay for the reading! The show is always a crowd pleaser! There will also be appetizers, wine and other beverages in addition to a pretty sweet 50-50 raffle!

Interviews

• Jess Meoni, one of the organizers of the event, is in need of zinester interviews for her video documentary for her graduate thesis. Questions will surround your experiences with zines. She is particularly interested in letterpressed works. If you don’t mind being interviewed, email her at scrantonzinefestival@gmail.com or come find her at the fest.

Some Other Food Recommendations

1. Pappa’s Pizza, 303 N Washington Ave: Nice sit-down place and local favorite. Pizzas are served “personal” style. Sandwiches, grinders, cheese fries, hot wings and salads are also available.
2. Coney Island Lunch, 515 Lackawanna Ave: Another sit-down place, but also for carryout. Texas-style wieners are served as well as fries, burgers, etc.
3. Eden, A Vegan Café, 344 Adams Ave: A very popular vegan-friendly location. Favorites include the Black Bean Avocado Wrap, soups, hot sandwiches, rich dishes and more.
4. Thai Thai Scranton, 309 N Washington Ave: Authentic Thai food. Bubble tea also available!
5. Northern Light Espresso Bar, 536 Spruce St: Popular hangout for coffee and other desserts. Vegetarian and vegan wraps are also available.
6. Mansour’s Market, 969 Prescott Ave: Excellent, somewhat extravagant spot for unique breakfast and lunch specialties.
7. Cooper’s Seafood House, 701 N Washington Ave: Complete with a rooftop party deck, Cooper’s is always having some fun, and lobster.
8. La Trattoria, 522 Moosic St: Hearty Italian meals, pastas, breads salads, the works.
9. City Café, 116 N Washington Ave: Quite and casual atmosphere bring out the best in this Mediterranean restaurant; both a meat-lovers and vegetarian/vegan compromise.
10. Downtown Deli, 300 Spruce St: A quaint little sandwich shop in walking distance from the festival. Too many options to name!

Meet Melissa Eismann, Creator of Wax Leaf Creations

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Melissa and I enjoy being outside very much! I spend most of my days making things for my shop/around the house/friends/family, working in the gardens, hiking, and cleaning up trash. I also enjoy meeting other people who make/sell their creations.

Who or what are your influences?
Everything! Especially nature. I don’t like to waste things so I try to make something out of anything I can. Also I am cleaning up an old dump in the back of my woods from people who lived in my house years ago so I find a lot of really cool old glass bottles, which I make a lot of terrariums out of.

What subjects do you touch upon in your work?
For now my work is focused on nature/crystals, I love the healing energy of crystals and I wish to share that with other people. In the future I want to start something to raise the importance of taking care of the earth and having your own garden/supporting local nurseries, farms, etc.

What is your most recent work?
I make a variety of things every day! One of the last things I made was a seashell windchime out of a deer jaw.

What are you looking forward to most at the fest?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people and seeing all of their work! I love seeing what others make and support them.

Arts on the Square Fest

For another great time, participate in this year’s Arts on the Square Fest in addition to the Scranton Zine Fest:

The 1st annual Arts on the Square will be taking place on July 27th 2013 from noon-8pm. This all day event will wrap around Courthouse Square with 2 stages filled with talented musicians, performing arts as well as children’s activities, the bookmobile and plenty of artisan vendors.

Mission:
A partnership between Lackawanna County, ScrantonMade and the local artist community to create an annual Arts Festival; featuring local, regional and national artists including fine art, performing art, culinary art, music, craft and design.

Vision:
To influence arts and commerce, while supporting artists and businesses in Lackawanna County with an exciting and interactive annual Arts Festival; providing the public, the exhibitors and the performers an experience of unparalleled quality.

Letterpress Shop/Zine Library on Adams Avenue in Scranton

Adding to the revitalization of the art scene in Scranton, Christine Medley, a design professor at Marywood University (and founder of Crow Designs), along with Matt Hiller, founder of Revival Press, will be establishing a letterpress shop on Adams Avenue in the coming months. On the same street that once housed one of the country’s first Internet Cafe and Bookstores, the now defunct Prufrock’s is only a memory of an independent library: but we have the power to change that.

Personally, I find this to be a great addition to the downtown area that will build interest in the history of graphic design. Letterpress takes time, patience and meticulous attention of detail (mostly) but it is also rewarding and most of all, extremely fun. If you can get excited about wooden or metal pieces of type, then this will be the place for you. Please keep on the lookout. I hope to get collections of zines for leisurely reading when workshops or art shows are held at the shop.

Great Park Zine Library

Kevin Staniec, the Arts, Culture and Heritage Program Specialist at Orange County Great Park Corporation has asked me to share this with you. They are looking build the first ever Zine Library in Orange County, California at the Orange County Great Park, Artists Studios. Below is the guidelines for submission.

The Zine Library is located in the Artists Studios at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine. The space is open Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am-4:00 pm and has welcomed over 24,000 guests since it opened in July of 2011.  Last summer, it welcomed 6,000 visitors!

GUIDELINES 

• You may submit as many different zines as you desire, but we will need a minimum of 2 copies of each title.
• Please submit content that is PG-13 as the venue is open to the public and visited by many families and children.
• Please mail 2 copies of each title to the following address:
